Project Overview
For a building that’s home to federal judicial proceedings, the Fred D. Thompson U.S. Courthouse needed to balance architectural elegance that befits its purpose with the security to operate safely. Located in downtown Nashville, Tenn., this six-story federal building was completed in 2022 and includes over 45,000 square feet of blast-resistant glazing. The building houses the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee and various federal agencies. Physical Security LLC played a crucial role in realizing the vision of Fentress Architects and Hensel Phelps, delivering custom glazing systems that meet the stringent performance and security requirements of a government building.
Scope of Work
We provided a full glazing package, including:
Custom-engineered curtainwall systems for the segmented façade.
Blast-resistant exterior glazing that meets federal anti-terrorism/force-protection standards.
High-performance insulated glass units for solar control and energy efficiency.
Interior glazing for secure zones and courtrooms, ensuring clarity without sacrificing security.
Challenges and Solutions
- Federal Security Requirements: Physical Security worked closely with the design-build team, using 3D BIM coordination to align the glazing system with GSA and federal standards.
- Complex Geometry: This building has a unique segmented glass façade. We utilized precise fabrication and installation, with tight tolerances to ensure a visually consistent curvature.
- Urban Site Logistics: With limited space on-site in downtown Nashville, our team optimized delivery and installation logistics to minimize disruption and adhere to a carefully planned schedule.
Results
Physical Security provided transparent glazing solutions, creating an iconic landmark in central Nashville that offers a welcoming entry and light-filled environment while maintaining high security. Our blast-resistant systems were integrated discreetly so that the building is protected to federal security standards without sacrificing aesthetic. The high-performance glass earned LEED Gold and SITES Silver certifications, ensuring the sustainability of the Fred D. Thompson U.S. Courthouse into the future.
